Oncorhynchus gorbuscha
Recently I started working on a series of illustrations inspired by the arts of indigenous people of the Amur Valley and the Russian Far East. Indigenous nations of the Amur Valley are: Nanai, Manchus, Ulchis, Negidals, Nivkhi, Evenki, Orochi and Udege.
Nature has been inseparable from the life of these people. River and taiga not only gave them food, but also clothing and household items. The culture and art crafts also have distinctive features like symbolism of each pattern and detail, symmetric and minimalistic depicture of a nature.
This is a collaboration work with my friend from Khabarovsk.
This image of the salmon is based on patterns used by Nanai people who live along the Amur River. A fishery is fundamental to this nation, because they use fish for food, clothes, art, etc.
This type of ornaments usually is called Tungus or Amurosahalinsky and it is build of simple spirals, meanders or S looking forms that can be associated with waves of the river or plants.
